Gretna Anvil Marriage (1952)
Gretna Green, Scotland. L, S horse drawn coach driving along country road. C, U signpost: Gretna Green 1 Mile. M, S roadway, coach drives past. C, U signpost to blacksmith s shop. M, S of smithy, coach drives in. The passengers are a runaway couple and friends, all dressed in Victorian period costume. Interior of blacksmith s shop, smithy at work (also in period dress). C, U couple at door, they come into smithy. Couple and friends come up to anvil. Smithy performs old fashioned marriage ritual. He places horseshoe on to the anvil, the couple join hands through it and the smithy taps it with a hammer. The couple unjoin hands and the bridegroom places ring on her finger. M, S wedding party round anvil, bride and groom kiss. Smithy leads the couple over to sign the register. Bridegroom signs first, followed by bride. Just then the bride s angry father bursts in and drags his daughter away. C, U coachman waiting outside Smithy. Party come through door lead by angry father. Angry father ra
