Type 97 Shinhoto Chi Ha Medium at Australian Army Tank Museum. Japanese Tank
The Australian Army Tank Museum at Puckapunyal, Victoria holds a collection of armored vehicles of interest to the School of Armour which trains personnel at this operational military base. This footage was shot on Thursday 06Oct2022 and is of the Type 97 Shinhoto (New Turret) ChiHa Medium Tank. This variant was fitted with a 47mm main gun that showed its effectiveness against M3 Stuart Light Tanks when first employed in The Philippines in May 1942. It has a V12 Mitsubishi diesel engine, and was fitted with 2 7. 7mm Type 97 machine guns mounted coaxially and in a hull ball mount. Armour was relatively thin at 33mm on the turret front and 25mm on the hull front.
