FLAVOR CHANGES VIA THE WEAK FORCE In the 1930s, some scientists had started to perform detailed studies of radiation from spacethe rich bounty of particles pelting us from the cosmos. The basic idea was that this might teach us something about how the Sun burned and presumably how the hydrogen atoms that boiled off the Sun would interact in the Earths atmosphere. That heralded a shift in scientific mindset, changing from big ideas, such as trying to find the building blocks of the universe, to seeing how it all fit together. However, the universe had a different plan.
