Simulacra NOWNESS
An aging Geisha recalls the rituals of her past and goes on a journey to revisit her younger selves. Captured in 3D motion and digital art, Simulacra was created by Los Angelesbased filmmaker Curry Sicong Tian and won the title of best alternative, experimental film at the 47th Student Oscars. Vibrant and engrossing, the film explores dualities inherent in life and the power to turn obstacles into a complementary force. Inspired by Jean Baudrillards philosophical treatise on simulation and symbols, and Japanese Butoh dance, this film transforms classical shapes into a synesthetic experiment, using a variety of graphic technologies and captivating sound design to create an immersive viewing experience. Tian is a motion designer, animator, and photographer. Born and raised in China, her work bridges the gap between Eastern and Western cultures by using video art to create alternative modes of storytelling.
