British Guiana The Country And Its Industries Reel 2 (1924)
Reel 2. Industries of British Guiana. Demerara sugar. Plantation workers climb aboard a train, tractor contraption to take them to work. We see some labourer s cottages in the countryside. Then we see a newly reaped corn field. Workers sit by the side of a river. The ground is ploughed b a tractor pulling a plough. A man cuts sugar cane with a simple hand tool. Workers in the field cut cane with scythes. Cane is loaded into punts which are towed down the canal by donkeys to the factory. Cane is transported to the milling plant by a conveyor belt. Top shot of several punts filled with sugar cane. Cane is loaded onto belt by a winch. Grooved rollers give the cane a preliminary crushing. Interior of factory. Processes are shown. C, U of roller mills which squeeze out the juice. The fibre from the cane stalks is collected and used as fuel for boiler furnaces. Juice is heated to remove impurities. Man in pith helmet inspects a sample. The clear juice is concentrated in vacuum pans.
