The Hebrew Bible and Canaanite texts share the name of the supreme God: ʾEl. The Canaanite ʾIl and the biblical ʾEl are the same supreme God. The name Yahweh was neither Canaanite nor Mesopotamian, originating with the Hebrews. Both Yahweh (יהוה) and Yeshuaʿ (ישוע, Jesus) assert their superiority over all gods other than ʾEl. Origins of the three names The name ʾEl derives from an archaic, ProtoSemitic, biliteral ʾl, meaning god.
