Red Cross California Northwest 2016 Education Hero Becky Fein
Becky Fein, who grew up in Monte Rio, was 20 years old when she traveled alone to Europe. During the trip, she was raped by a Youth Hostel employee. Returning home, she battled depression, anxiety and, sometimes, guilt. The topics of sexual health, womens rights and reproductive justice were the pervasive themes of Beckys undergraduate studies at the University of California Davis. And her passion for the broad topic of sexual health education led her to pursue a Masters degree of Public Health at Columbia University in New York City. But in 2011, wanting to help others who had been similarly attacked, Becky started a video series called the Powerful Voices Project; the series features people who have experienced sexual assaultand triumphed over it. The videos are shattering myths about the subject, including who it involves and what form it takes; in the process, they are showcasing the resiliency of people who have endured rape, abuse, molestation and other forms of sexual assault.
