Japanese Emperor Naruhito proclaimed his enthronement on Tuesday at Tokyo s imperial palace in a centuriesold ceremony attended by some 2, 000 people, including world leaders and other dignitaries from more than 170 countries. Naruhito, 59, and Empress Masako, a 55yearold Harvardeducated former diplomat, took over in May in a brief, traditionfilled ceremony but Tuesday s Sokui no Rei is a more elaborate ritual in which he officially announces his change in status to the world.
