In 1942, Tanya s entire family was shot by the Nazis because her father was a communist and chairman of a collective farm. Tanya was saved by the fact that she was visiting her family in a nearby village at that time. Tanya ended up in a partisan detachment and, at the age of 14, blew up her first train, which was carrying German tanks.
