George was the rhythm guitarist with the Tornados, from their beginnings in 1961 as a nameless group of session musicians, working for Joe Meek at his Holloway Road recording studio in north London. They became known as the Tornados in February 1962, a name being necessary when they secured a contract to become Billy Fury s backing band. George continued with them until August 1963, when he quit due to health reasons, having collapsed on stage due to the strain of constant touring. He played on their singles Love and fury, the galactic mega hit Telstar, Globetrotter, Robot, Ice Cream Man, their EPs Sounds of the Tornados, Telstar, More sounds of the Tornados, Tornado Rock and on their album Away from it all.
