George was the rhythm guitarist with the Tornados, from their beginnings in 1961 as a nameless group of session musicians, working for Joe Meek at his Holloway Road recording studio in north London. They became known as the Tornados in February 1962, a name being necessary when they secured a contract to become Billy Fury s backing band. George continued with them until August 1963, when he quit due to health reasons, having collapsed on stage due to the strain of constant touring.
