Around 20082009, it became increasingly popular among (mainly) high school students to wear padded jackets, more specifically those from North Face. In order to fit in and not be ostracized at school, many students put a lot of pressure on their parents to pay for a jacket for them. Due to their notoriously high prices, the jackets became to be called the spine breakers because students would break their parent s backs to keep up with the expensive trends.
