Light Leather From Animal Skins (1940 1949)
British Instructional Films. Animal skins arrive at a factory in a big bundle. They are inspected. The skins are soaked and washed. Men put the skins into a large vat. Water is poured on the skins and a paddle turns around to wash the skins. Skins are taken out of the vats and laid flat. They are treated with lime solution which loosens the hair and flesh. The fur is peeled off with a special tool. The skins are flattened out by a mangle. The skins are moved by trolley and thrown into another washing machine. The pure pelt is shown in C, U. Tanning the leather. A large mill wheel is seen. The skins are placed into large vats, white powder is measured into a bucket then poured into a barrel. Steam is added. The door of the vat is closed and the vat is turned by machine. The vats stop turning after a few hours. The skins are taken out of the barrel and stretched. They are now leather.
