Japanese Naginata Basic Practice Cuts
Naginata is a long Japanese polearm with a singleedged curved blade attached at the end. It is commonly used by ancient Samurai warriors in battlefield and delivers powerful fearsome cuts. This video is a series of basic practice drills, known as Suburi. There are still a number of Samurai sword weapon schools in Japan, called Koryu, which teaches Kenjutsu and sometimes Naginatajutsu as well. In modern day Kendo, the equivalent is Atarashii Naginata, where practitioners wear protective armour (called Bogu) and duel or fence with a bamboo Naginata. The armour is similar to Kendo armour, but with the addition of Suneate, which is the armour for the shins. Unlike Kendo where the legs are invalid targets, Atarashii Naginata actually allows you to score a point by attacking your opponent s shin. Other good videos 1) Naginata versus Kendo Exhibition
