Vincenzo Capirola: Ricercar XI alla Spagnola; David Tayler, renaissance lute 4 K
One of the most elegant compositions from the Capirola lute book: Ricercar XI alla Spagnola, performed by David Tayler on the renaissance lute. The Capirola lute book from circa 1517, contains some of the earliest compositions for lute. Ricercar XI alternates chordal passages with wide ranging melodic lines. There was a rainstorm during the concert which adds some natural atmosphere to the background sound. I first heard this piece performed by my lute teacher, Lucy Cross, in 1970. She was amazing Lute by Andreas von Holst, based on the early renaissance lute by Hans Frey of Bologna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
