Digging into the swing pulse and keeping my overall volume down on my LowVolume NYC practice kit When Miles Davis played the tune Bye Bye Blackbird, he established a deep quarternoteswingpulse that is a joy to play with. When I was first developing my swing playing as a young drum student, I practiced for hours, playing along with Miles various records featuring Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. (The albums Workin, Steamin, Relaxin and Cookin. ) The pulse they created informed me of the kind of feel I wanted to bring to the bandstand. This live version of Bye Bye Blackbird features Miles Davis on trumpet, Jimmy Cobb on drums, Wynton Kelly on piano, John Coltrane on sax and Paul Chambers on bass. The tempo is an ideal mediumswing feel. When I play along, I focus on the bass and the soloist and align my playing to stay in the groove and keep the forwardmotiondrive that a good jazz rhythm section creates to inspire the soloist.
