Nature s power revealed

The Lightning Imager on board Europes newest and most advanced meteorological satellite, Meteosat Third Generation Imager 1 has been switched on and is delivering its impressive first results. This animation is a compilation created from three of the Lightning Imagers cameras and shows a range of meteorological features, including storms in Europe and the development of storms in the Sahel region of Africa. The instrument has four cameras continuously observing lightning over Europe, Africa, the Middle East and parts of South America. EUMETSAT will disseminate the data to weather services in its member states and beyond. Crucially, EUMETSAT will deliver the data to weather services in Africa and other regions where the capability to detect lightning with groundbased observations is limited. The animations were created from raw preliminary data and are not for operational use.
