Vacuum cleaner salesmen Homer Smith (Jimmy Durante) and Brewster Jones (Phil Silvers) offend technophobic Col. Dobson while trying to sell him a vacuum. Determined to make a sale, Homer pitches to a recruitment officer and inadvertently enlists himself and Brewster in the army. The two are attached to Dobson s cavalry unit, where they are assigned to sell Dobson on the value of tanks with the aid of Dobson s daughter, Bliss (Jane Wyman), and her fiancé, Capt. Joe Radcliffe (Regis Toomey).
