Bill Neal Elk Whistle Song
The bull elk makes a whistling sound from his throat that is part of his mating call to the cows in the herd (along with grunts and squeals). The Native American flutes that were traditional to the Great Plains of North America made that same whistling sound. Among the original people of the northern plains, the flutes were referred to as elk whistles. And there are some elk whistles that are just whistles, not flutes at all. But they are not simply musical instruments.
