Kath died on 8th. October 1953 at the age of 41. The music world was stunned. This much loved British contralto had become a household name with her broadcasts of Blow the Wind Southerly, What is Life and an ever expanding repertoire of lieder, Passions, Oratorios and folk songs in addition to the operas Rape of Lucretia and Orfeo and Euridice. In 1953 the world lost a unique voice and person. This short clip is from the BBC broadcast in 2003 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death. Full film available through the usual outlets.
