Les Matelles on Google Maps: The construction of the Battlements of Les Matelles dates back to 1425, but Les Matelles was already a capital since 1276, date of the foundation of the Republic of Montferrand thanks to the charters and franchises granted by the Bishop of Maguelone, Count of Melgueil (Mauguio) and Montferrand. The historic centre of the village of Les Matelles has retained its medieval appearance. Its entry into history is discreet and late. Indeed, the oldest known document is an extract from the Cartulaire de Maguelone dated from the twelfth century. There is mention of a church, which would prove the existence of a permanent community, but all in all modest, because the village bears neither the title of castrum (castle of an independent lordship) nor that of parrochia (parish).
