Orchid Bee Males
Orchid Bees especially the males are attracted to aromatic fragrances found in the orchid flowers. Researchers have created similar artificial substances to be able to collect bees and to study their behavior. Male bees collect and store fragrances in specialized pockets in their hind legs. Apparently female bees prefer to mate with males that have rich and sexy scents. The artificial fragrance used in the video Bee Studies is very attractive to the bees. They want to defend resources they have found from other males. The bees perform rapid maneuvers in their aerial competitions and they are aggressive, fast and strong fliers. They chase each others, even wrestle and try to bite each others legs. Eventually at the end of the video one population of bees is pushed away by another and clearly bigger species. Sanna Kannisto
