Watch Guillermo del Toro s Oscar 2018 acceptance speech for Best Directing for The Shape of Water at the 90th Academy Awards. In his speech he says, I am an immigrant The greatest thing our industry does is to erase the lines in the sand and we should continue doing that even when the world tells us to make them deeper. He reflected on the journey to create the film saying, The place I d like to thank the most is came to listen to a mad pitch with some drawings and a story and they believed that a fairytale about an amphibian god and a nude woman was a sure He then topped off the night by also winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
