New Caledonia has imposed a curfew until 6am Wednesday, after violent protests broke out over proposed changes to the constitution. Dozens of people have been arrested, police injured and buildings damaged, while all flights in and out of the territory have been cancelled. Madeline LoBooth reports the protests come ahead of a vote in the French National Assembly to change New Caledonias constitution, which could see more French residents able to vote in the territory. Australias former ConsulGeneral to New Caledonia, Denise Fisher, tells The World s Beverley O Connor its not something thats happened just out of the blue.
