Notes from Will McNicol Often when I play the first few notes on an instrument something will strike me first, before anything else. In this instance it was definitely Cleos overall resonance one note gave me so much more than just one note. I remarked about this to Tom, and how I was enjoying playing with compositional ideas which explored that particular quality. Quite addictive, as it turns out Tom suggested I should crack on and write a short piece based on these ideas. So, I did. The fundamental principle was to explore the exceptional sympathetic resonance. So I started by trying different tunings to discover which I felt gave the best response and palette for the piece. I landed on DADGAE. Then the real fun began writing treble melodies which would provide their own accompaniment without me needing to play any other strings. Depending on the pow
