The first time I saw Vinnie Colaiuta do this (playing Mad About You by Sting) I instantly ran to the kit to give it a FAIL Now Vinnie was playing a groove that used this technique but I needed to come up with a system for learning the skills needed to play his groove. So I took what he was doing between his right hand and left foot and inserted a 16th note grid on the bass drum. It took me about a week to nail all possible single note placements but one I did, Vinnie s groove was 100 doable for me.
