The problem with chickens is that they are messy and wasteful. This zero budget DIY build reduces chicken feed waste by preventing chickens from using their feeder as a toilet, as well as keeping them from kicking out feed or kicking bedding INTO the feeder. This was built entirely from scrap material laying around the homestead. Keeping permaculture chickens means learning to do more with less. I m working towards a system like Paul Gautschi or Karl Hammer s, where the need for external feed inputs is completely eliminated, but in the meantime I m working to reduce the waste of the external food inputs being brought in. I do feed my chickens entirely for free. If you watched my last video detailing the breeding goals for my chicken landrace project, then you ll know that I trade eggs for feed in order to cover the food needs for my birds.
