Buckingham Nicks, Nomad (later renamed Candlebright), 1972
Although Stevie had recorded at least ten songs in a wispy folk vein prior to the coffee plant demosone of which, Rose Garden, she would keep recording and performing for decadesthe songs she recorded with Lindsey Buckingham in 1972 represent a major breakthrough in her songwriting, which is now utterly original and highly dramatic. On Nomad, Lindsey plays two beautifully matched but quite different acoustic guitar parts, one for each speaker, and offers thoughtful vocal harmony while Stevie sings about restlessness, travel, coming home, and not being sure where she belongs. Its an unsettling, unspontaneous art song, with unexpected chords, internal rhymes, and an ending like a question mark.
