Charles Wilfrid de Bériot: Souvenir de la Patrie
Phillip Sear plays a piano transcription by its composer of an intermezzo from the symphonic poem Fernand Cortez. It was written by the French pianist and composer CharlesWilfrid de Bériot (18331914). CharlesWilfrid de Bériot was born into musical royalty of his period: his father was the famous violinist Charles Auguste de Bériot (180270), and his mother the even more famous singer, Maria Malibran (180836). After his mother s untimely death in a riding accident, de Bériot senior married the adopted (half ) sister of the celebrated pianist Sigismond Thalberg, and de Bériot junior had the benefit of piano lessons from his new stepuncle. He became a professor of piano at the École Niedermeyer, and later at the Paris Conservatoire, where his pupils included Maurice Ravel and Ricardo Viñes; he also taught Granados privately.
