Chiharu Shiota, The Locked Room installation in KAAT Kanagaawa Arts Theatre, 2016
The Berlinbased artist Chiharu Shiota creates enormous, roomspanning artworks using ordinary items like string, dresses, beds, shoes, and travelling bags. For this exhibition she has recreated The Locked Room, a work she originally showed as a representative of Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. This installation involves massive amounts of red thread, keys once used by people around the world, and now, for the first time, five antique doors. Her oneofakind understanding of the world manifested in this work has an overwhelming power to stir emotions.
