The Railway opened up travel opporunities for many in the early nineteenth century. Travel at Christmas being one of them Until the modern idea of Christmas had been pretty much invented from scratch by Charles Dickens or Harriet Martineau, Christmas was not so big a deal as it is now certainly not as commercialised.
