The Gippsland Spiny Crayfish is a large member of the Euastacus group of spiny crays that are endemic to the freshwater rivers and streams of southeastern Australia. Although they are superficially similiar to the familiar Yabbie (Cherax destructor), they are in fact quite different and are very long lived, taking a considerable time to reach reproductive maturity and as such they are especially susceptible to overfishing.
