How to paint a portrait in oil after Velazquez (limited palette)
Full video in real time of this copy. I am fascinated by how Velazquez was able to pull this off with such economy of means. I m using a limited palette here that could be considered part, but not all, of a baroque palette. I want to show how these effects can be achieved with this kind of palette. Yellow Ochre Vermilion Burnt Umber Titanium White ( not available in 17th century, and Velazquez used a lead white with calcite for me titanium white is close enough). Calcite is chalk that Velazquez mixed in his paint. In oil paint it becomes translucent while giving body to the paint. I can t at the moment say how he used it without trying it much. I bought a tube of so called Velazquez medium and used some of that here, but I ll experiment with it more in future videos so we ll see how that goes.
