Thomas Moore (b 1779 in Dublin; d 1852 in Slopertone Cottage near Bromham, England) was an Irish poet, author, translator, and ballad singer. The publication of his ballads in 1808 was a great success. Moore helped these songs attain great popularity by traveling throughout England and Ireland, and performing them to his own piano accompaniments. Fionnuala McCoy, a figure from Irish mythology, was the daughter of Lir. In the legend Children of Lir, she is transformed into a swan by her stepmother Aoife, and, together with her brothers, condemned to wander Irelands lakes and rivers for nine hundred years, until she is saved by Lairgren. The curse is broken by their marriage. The Song of Fionnuala tells of Fionnualas nine hundred years of restless wandering.
