A Century of Decline for the British Pound
The truth is that the UK built up its wealth on slavery, empire and suppression of its work forces at home and overseas. Then on plundering the British Empire mostly India (which was as large as India and Pakistan and Bangladesh today) and the backs of the oppressed in British Empire. Think sugar then tobacco then rubber and all the while in the background: food, metals and import, export. The UK Government was happy to force famine on India (the large colonial India) in order to satisfy its own needs and wishes. I think if a similar chart was drawn of the decline in size of the UK empire it would closely match the decline in the value of the Pound.
