A Leclair Largo on the Pardessus de Viole

A recording of the Largo of JeanMarie Leclair s Sonata VII in a minor, played on the pardessus de viole by Tina Chancey, with Webb Wiggins, harpsichord and Susie Napper, bass viola da gamba. The pardessus was a hybrid, a mixture of the violin and the viola da gamba with five strings and frets, tuned in a combination of fifths and fourths and played on the lap. It was created for 18th century aristocratic Frenchwomen who loved violin music but were prevented by custom from placing an instrument on their sh
