Many courtly works were devoted to the subject. The troubadours of Southern France and, more especially, the trouvères of Northern France (nonclerical intellectuals) were often inspired by the exuberance of nature at that time of year. The chansons de mai (May songs) take many forms, including dances, reverdies, motets and pastourelles. They are all descriptive in character and inspired by popular and rural subjects.
