How to make a pocketknife like your Grandad owned. Hardening Blade Spring This is my home made gas forge. I made this a number of years ago. The inside fire wall is mate from clay and vermiculite. Appox. Proportions 95 vermiculite and 5 clay over repeated firings this becomes very hard and reflects heat. Pre heat forge and place blade into forge. Correct temperature is reached when blade will not stick to magnet. Quench hot blade into warm motor oil his will harden the steel to a very brittle state.
