Big Boy, 4014 UP, 844 Double header Cheyenne to Rawlins, Wyoming
Union Pacific, Big Boy, ,4014 and Union Pacific, ,844 couple together for a rare double header to Utah State. This will be the first official excursion for the, 4014 since it s return to steam. This special event was for the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad. Unfortunately with two steam locomotives and a short train, neither locomotive is working very hard. Big Boy, 4014 has so much power it is hardly used. It is one of the quietest locomotives I have ever heard. We did have great weather on this day and tens of thousands of people showed up for the big event. The people chasing the train was several miles long. Wyoming is probably the least exciting State to rail fan in with drab scenery, high winds, sparse towns, and much of the rail line inaccessible. Hopefully in future excursions they can put the usual 18 car train behind the Big Boy and we can let this dog off it s leash and let it bark.
