Hanyu s hometown Sendai City (Miyagi Prefecture) was badly affected by Great East Japan Earthquake and giant tsunami. He was evacuated to an emergency shelter for days, and even thought of giving up ice skating. The only ice rink in the prefecture were damaged too, he lost a practice field.
