Debating About the CONSTITUTION Federalists vs. Anti Federalists AP Government Review
In this video Heimler explains the major debates between the Federalists and the AntiFederalists during the constitutional convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Federalists boasted guys like Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and George Washington on their roster. The AntiFederalists had George Mason and Patrick Henry. There were five major debates between the Federalists and the AntiFederalists: 1. Majority rule vs. minority rights. This was the problem, as James Madison explains in Federalist 10, of factions. His solution to the problem was to separate power between the branches of government so that no one faction could oppress another. 2. Large states vs. Small States. The respective plans under consideration were the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. The result was the Great Compromise which established two houses of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives. 3. Legislative power vs. executive power.
