On December 4, 2011 seventeen St. Mark s students led by St. Mark s mathematics teacher Dr. James Tanton succeeded in setting a new paper folding record of 13 stable folds using just over 10 miles (53, 000 feet) of toilet paper and the 3rd floor of MIT s famous Infinite Corridor. The St. Mark s folding team were the guests of MIT s origami club, OrigaMIT. The exercise dramatically demonstrates exponential decay as the 10 miles of paper, after 13 folds, is now about 5 feet long and 2andahalf feet high (with 8129 layers).
