Conductor piano Borja Mariño Director Nicola Beller Carbone Ana Quintans, soprano Premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 2000, the libretto is inspired by a true story that took place in the 1820s: the impossible relationship between King Pedro IV of Brazil and the Marquise Domitila de Castro. Under the guise of a monologue, Domitila reminisce their frustrated romance by reading the letters exchanged between them, thus creating a polyphony of characters. The yoke they both bear is represented trapped between strings, as if they were a single character with different appearances struggling with themselves to find balance in the midst of the ties that condition their existence.
