Malanka (Ukrainian: Щедрий вечiр, Shchedruy vechir) is a Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian folk holiday celebrated on 13 January, which is New Year s Eve in accordance with the Julian calendar. On this night in Ukraine, carolers traditionally went from house to house playing pranks or acting out a small play, with a bachelor (Malanka) dressed in women s clothing leading the troop. The troop may have Malanka, Vasyl (her husband or boyfriend), a Goat, a Beast. guys in native attires etc.
