Written around 1724, it is the most majestic and grand of the two Te Deum s of Zelenka, which is set for SSATB chorus, chorus of trumpets, 2 oboes, strings and continuo. This Ambrosian hymn of thanksgiving in it s grand setting conceived in several movements, was performed in court chapels in the 18th century, particularly on non liturgical occasions; for example, to mark political events such as military victories or peace treaties, or domestic celebrations in the rulers household such as the weddings of christenings of members of the Elector s family in Dresden. Zelenka s Te Deum is divided into 13 sections; nine choruses, 2 arias, a duet, and a Gregorian intonation Salvum fac at the beginning of the second half, after the consecration of the Eucharist.
