Not recommend for folks at very cold ( less than10C) who use top entrances. Opening the lower entrance will cause an increase in air flow through your hive. I only have a lower entrance, so minimum impact. It was 10C when I tested my contraption. I have 12 temperature sensors so I will check later to see what impact I had on the hive energetics. So the hack: a cedar window, door jam shim, sharpy to mark the 1 increments, electric tape, a male, female lightning port extension cord (14CAD on Amazon). The purpose was to get footage of my winter clusters to go along with the the analysis that I am doing. IR cameras are useless when taking pictures of insulated hives other than looking for heat loss locations. This a single brood hive: The darker surface are the bars from my slatted rack. The orange, dark purple ones are the bottom of the frames. Bee s thorax seems to be in the 25 to 28C range. Little report on the trial.
