Simon Phillips Kumi Na Moja ( Live) 2008
Whenever I see Phillips set, I m reminded of way back when I was in my teens, going from house to house to jam with my musician friends. The old rule was the bigger the set you d find there, the lousier the drummer actually was they all had rich parents who d indulge their talentless kids with flashy sets to show off to their friends and neighbors, but they weren t fooling anybody, really. Now Phillips playing, on the other hand, is a study of just what really CAN be accomplished with a big set, when a drummer knows exactly what each drum is good for, and when to use it.
