Off Grid from an Old Soviet Tower with two inclined Dipole Antennas, OFFline Promoting Amateur Radio
We went to operate at an old Soviet navigation tower that stands right off the coastline between St. Petersburg and the border with Finland. We were concerned that our dipole antennas would not perform very well from being too close to such a huge metal structure. We hung two identical inclined dipoles for the 20 meter band, facing in opposite directions. They both worked perfectly with a very good SWR and resonance was also at the right point MHz :) So, I did not detect any interference from the tower When I work ham radio portable, I take every opportunity to demonstrate our hobby to random people who happen to be around my QRV location. There were many young people on the shores of the Gulf of Finland on the evening when we went there to operate. They helped us to hang the antennas up, and then watched with great interest what came from their installation. Everyone has smartphones and other gadgets, but with radio there is something special with how it naturally works over the air Ham
