MORMON ANGEL: Porter Rockwell killed more men than Wyatt Earp, Doc Holladay Bat Masterson combined
Orrin Porter Rockwell was one of the most unique figures of the Wild West period of American history. He was a gunfighter, scout, guide, US Deputy marshall and personal bodyguard of Mormon founder Joseph Smith and Mormon leader Brigham Young. In the west he purportedly killed more men than Wyatt Earp, Doc Holladay, Batt Masterson, and Tom Horn combined. Known as the destroying angel, in 1869 Rockwell once told a crowd, I never killed anyone who didn t need killing. a quote used by actor John Wayne in a movie decades later.
