Scharnhorst and Gneisenau part 1

In May 1940 the German Naval High Command prepared an operation against the supply lines for the British army still fighting on northern Norway. Primary area of operations were Harstad, Andfjord, Vaagsfjord and possibly Ofotfjord, secondary target were convoys directed to Trondheim, Saltdal, Bodo and Mo. The codename for this operation was Juno and the command of the fleet sailing, composed by Gneisenau (flagship), Scharnhorst, heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper and the four destroyers Karl Galster, Hans Lody, Erich Steinbrink and Hermann Schoemann was personally selected by fleet commander Admiral Wilhelm Marschall.
