Four years before the Village People made their gay macho debut, celebrity hairdresser Monti Rock III (born Joseph Montenez Jr on May 29, 1942) was making the rounds of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Merv Griffin Show dressed as a Mack Daddy in furs, rings and hat as kind of a running gay joke. His big, effusive personality and quick wit made him a media darling and producer Bob Crewe (he of Four Seasons fame) suggested that Monti form a studio disco group. Out of that meeting came Disco Tex His Sexolettes and the iconic Get Dancin . Written by Kenny Nolan (Firefly, I Like Dreaming ) and Crewe, the song took the disco sound to a new level by adding party crowd sounds when they recorded the song to give it a live feeling. This collaboration was important as it was the first time that gay men were making the music rather than remixing the song or just playing it in the clubs.
